Back pain is a common symptom experienced by many people, from children all the way to the elderly.
Common causes include; poor posture, poor mattress or sleeping patterns, repetitive movements (from house work or sports) and lifting of heavy objects.
More serious causes of back pain include, motor vehicle accidents (which cause damage to the fascia, bones/joints/muscles and ligaments), arthritis, osteoporosis, slipped discs and other degenerative spinal conditions.
Up to 80% of the population will experience back pain at some point in their life.
It is important identify the cause of the problem as soon as possible. A health care provider will be able to assist you with this and start you on the correct path of treatment.
Initial treatment might involve short periods of rest and exercise/daily living modification.
Furthermore, a combination of cyro- and thermo – therapy (hot/cold) may be advised.
Heat treatment allows for spasmed muscles to relax and increases blood flow to the problematic area. In the event of the back being painful due to inflammation, ice is recommended to assist with the healing process.
Once initial pain is reduced it is recommended that a biokineticist assist the patient with back rehabilitation exercises and stretches. Furthermore, a biokineticist will assist with posture correction and teach the patient how to do certain activities (i.e. lifting heavy objects in the correction manner to avoid future injuries).
Focuses is placed on pain reduction, strengthening the core and restoring the body to an optimal and efficient position.
Your core is more than just sit ups, it’s a deeper muscle that forms a corset around your abdomen/lower back area and protects the back.
Below are some basic exercises that can assist with back pain. It is important to note, should you experience any pain whilst performing the exercise stop immediately and consult your health care provider to see if these are safe for you.
1. Four-point kneeling superman
2. Hip lifts
